He does hear that little bud of hope in her voice, but it doesn’t sway his mind one way or another. In fact, he pretends as though he hasn’t heard it, even as she clears her throat and confirms to him that she doesn’t want her own opinions to change his. It’s a relief he didn’t know he needed, and despite how their foreheads are pressed together, he does give a soft little nod that she can feel, to know that he’s heard her. “I have reached a point in my life where I do want the opportunity to be a father. I got a taste of it with the twins and with Kamaria, and I was good at it. I just… Couldn’t be what the twins needed when the war ended and Safrin dug her claws into Kamaria…” A regret, but he was strong enough to know that staying with him would not be good for them.
But he visits often, is always there to celebrate their birthdays. And now, he has a chance to try again, with hopefully far less bullshit in the way of making it so he could be the exact opposite of Shaju. A good father. “But if that isn’t something you want, I understand.” Placing the ball in her court, as it were, to tell him whether or not that was something they could focus on in the future should the opportunity arise.
As for his immortality, he can understand exactly what her tone and words imply – the fact that he might not have a choice. The fact he should have said I’m not immortal… Yet. Because it was very likely it could be possible, probable even, even if it were something he didn’t want with every ounce of his being.
Her lips are a gentle distraction away from that particular rabbit hole. And Sunjata presses into the kiss gently before she withdraws, simply enjoying the closeness and openness (if not feeling a little bit awkward about his overreaction). “I thought so, too. But it might call me away occasionally.” Which wouldn’t be that different from her duties back in Halo nor his duties to Frey, anyway. They could manage. They would manage it.
