Remnants of lichen and moss blackened and shriveled as the heat intensified. Hissing and spitting under the flames, all the vegetation burned off until only bare stone remained. As warmth soaked into it, the limbs of the statue began to soften. Slowly, gradually, gray feldspar lightened into fair skin, into supple flesh and blood as a petrified heart began to beat again.
To Maea, it was like rising up from some dark abyss. Bubbles of awareness that shimmered and popped, restoring one sense after the other. Itching, prickling numbness intensified and faded, like the thawing of frozen limbs after too much time in the snow. Delicious warmth enveloped her and for some time all she knew was contentment.
When she came to, Maea found herself curled up on a bed of smoldering embers. Cold, damp air bit against her bare skin and a shudder wrecked the thin frame. Looking down, she registered the embers, the tongues of bluish fire that lapped against her. Panic lanced through her mind, ingrained and habitual, and she shot up on her knees – only to realize that she was fine. More than fine; she felt good. Scents and sensations assaulted her in an onslaught of information both familiar and foreign, yet it was good because for the first time in what seemed like a lifetime, she could feel again.
Dazed, she looked about to find her bearings and found her gaze snagging on the figure of a stranger. The heavy coat he had wrapped himself into made her uncomfortably aware of her own stateof undress; awkwardly, she shifted in an attempt to cover herself up.
