"I'll stick with the horse, you're welcome to join me," he offers to Flora amiably, still petting Penelope's soft nose. It will make him a little slower initially but will certainly make him faster than doing it by hand and growing tired of the course of the afternoon. Whether she chooses to or not, Jude opens one of the sacks of stones in the back so he can withdraw them in small handfuls to begin marking the perimeter and returns to the pony's head to encourage her along.
