His arms bulged, attempting to pull him from the devouring sand, but they weren't enough. Zavien cried out in frustration and paused his efforts to reassess. The stump was still his best option despite his lack of strength (curse you 10 STR!). He vowed to train more when this was all over. If his strength was what stood between the life and death of someone he cared about, he didn't want to fail them. In order to do that, he had to get out of this mud.
A faint memory floated back to him of someone mentioning that the best way to escape quicksand was to spread out your body weight. Although he had no idea why that might help, he was out of other ideas. If this didn't work, it was possible he would find himself in an even more precarious situation. But what was his other option? Giving up? A determined smile crept onto his face. He was never one to give in.
Making up his mind, Zavien leaned forward on the soft ground in a crawling position. He maintained hold of his rope, using it as an anchor and lead to support his efforts. With a grunt, he began half crawling/half pulling his way out of the sand. As he does so, he is faintly aware of a commotion happening by the river.
Zavien is spreading his weight to decrease the hold of the quicksand while continuing to pull on the rope to crawl out.
