As with Deimos' gloves, the fear of having the blade fall into the wrong hands was something that worried the Bastion endlessly, hence why it was locked and bound somewhere only he knew about.

"Well, if you are ever with me, I can promise to keep you safe." Such was the benefit of being able to literally give up pieces of himself to protect those around him.
