Her own smile was no less bleak. Already she regretted interrupting the pair just to deliver bad news. But while there was no dragon on the courtyard, a monster had still gotten in, and she felt more than a little responsible.
"I really wish no one had to," she told Remi. "But I suppose this region can't avoid trouble." She drew a deep breath. "Dahlia crashed the meeting. No one got hurt - but it was a close thing. I - I made a mistake." The understatement of the year, that. But this was not the time to go over what she did and did not do correctly. "It appears the barrier against void creatures doesn't so anything to keep the Family out."
Somewhere she had thought it would. To discover otherwise had been as nasty a shock as seeing Dahlia in the doorway to Maea's own office.
