When hope and peace begin to fray
Evie hides her endeared laughter into her shoulder as if miming a cough when Amhran fumbles the handshake so immediately. She doesn't expect Deimos to be so easily enchanted, but how can you not?
"Hunger feels similar to how you might have felt when you wanted your roots watered," she jumps in, grasping for the closest example she can think of. "For water it's usually called thirst. For food it's called hunger and is closest to...hmm...the level of material in the soil?" She keeps a careful balance of that in her greenhouse so she isn't sure if it had ever gotten to a level where it would feel like the human equivalent of hunger.
Then her eyes go to Deimos as she says, "I would like you to stay. We have the room, and it is hard to stay safe outside in the cold without carrying many things around." The unspoken request for her husband to agree is entirely in her eyes. Evie turns and smiles encouragingly at Amhran, uncertain how soon he'll feel the need for independence. "If you ever want a home of your own, no matter how soon, we can also find one for you." But he seems so frail to her, tall and willowy and new as he is. She doesn't want him out and about until he is a fraction more experienced. "How about we get some water and snacks and see if we can introduce you to what hunger and thirst feel like in this body?" Maybe actionable movement is better than sitting around now that she thinks about the failed handshake - and immediately has to restrain another laugh.
