Oh, when the world is burning
Had she really not mentioned it? The seasons had passed in a blur, and what had been spoken of to whom, committed to letters or simply forgotten was anyone's guess. But the excitement had not faded. Neither over the magic that hummed in her veins like a half remembered song, nor of being allowed to share such a small, personal victory with a friend who actually understood what it meant.
Startled at his surprise, Maea yielded her hand to him and laughed over the fizzy pop fireworks in her belly the gesture started up. "I got it back," she confirmed happily. Shaping sparks into little butterflies that came fluttering out of the hearth to really prove it, all thoughts of food and chores fell away. "It happened sometime in Longheat. Barely a whisper at first, but it's been growing rather quickly. It's fire, not water, but... that doesn't even matter. It's like I've gotten a piece of myself back."
Squeezing his hand gently, the lightness in her chest bled through in a wistful, complicated expression. Regret, relief, joy and sorrow all at once - but then a genuine smile chased all the rest away, because she had gained more than just magic recently.
"And - and, Harper, I can fly. A shift - I was granted a Gore Crow shift." Words simply were not enough to express that joy. It was utter and complete, and only her lack of attunement kept her from sharing it entirely with him.
