At least, in whatever insanity this situation is, he's finally managed to realise that the horror seems to be chasing after fireballs (and really, it would be fucking hilarious if it weren't so disgusting). "It wants the heat," he says, scrabbling to try and get around to where Dantalion is standing, grabbing a branch from the ground in the hope of setting it alight, either with the Maverick's fire or whatever flames might be leftover on the ground.
"Hey!" Waving the fiery branch at the Void Horror, perhaps this way he can distract it deeper into the jungle. And, you know, away from civilisation.
After feeling quite put out by the effectiveness of their idea, Mateo finally realises that void thing like fire. He grabs a branch and tries to set it alight with Dantalion's fire to coax the creature deeper into the Oerwoud.
