Glancing through a half-lidded eye at the little worm as it crawled up towards him, Isar let off a huff of quiet amusement. At himself and the fuss he would have raised if he'd been less sleepy - at the audacity of this creature, whose true identity he had yet to become aware of. Nestled together into the sand they could have been longstanding friends, or perhaps even lovers; siblings, comrades in arms, a reluctant union based on mutual necessity.
But they were no such things. Just a pair of loners huddled together on a strip of beach, stealing a moment of quiet before dawn inevitably saw them each on their separate paths.
He didn't mind. And if the big fyrhund wound up curling tighter around the molten puddle of lava sometime during the night, it could be chalked up to coincidence. Warmth. Plain happenstance. Who even bothered to ask for the reason why animals did what they did?
Not the whale. She was beyond caring.
