It was only thanks to a rather demanding warble of pain that the queen's grip loosened in favour of reaching down for her leg as if she might be able to do anything to quiet the roar herself. Slipping her foot out of the strappy shoe had a hiss of pain parting her lips, and had it not been for that, she too might have done a double-take in response.
