There were many different options to fall back on when your mind was flooded with dread. Some fought, some ran. Some just froze, unable to move, watching events unfold before their eyes without being able to move a muscle. Like now, when a rustle and crumbling of dirt and roots swallowed Thalassa whole while shadows began to whisper and crawl at the edge of her vision.
A rope was pressed into her hands. Reflexively Maea's fingers closed around it, and like a sleepwalker she looked around, kipping for breath as panic began to set in. Tie... tie it off? A tree! She needed a tree, before Tal dove headlong into water with no anchor and no way to be hauled back to the surface. The water rippled, inky black and Bottomless despite being so clear. Maea rounded a tree, her hands shaking - all but sobbing under the influence of the void, she almost begged him not to leave her alone out here.
But he was already diving in. And suddenly she was on her own, left behind to listen to the rustle and grunt of things that may or may not be there. Squeezing her eyes shut the young woman hunkered down behind the tree, holding on to the rope like it was become the only real thing in the world.
It was all she could do to remain where she was and not run off.
