Amhran, as a general rule, does not venture out from the Citadel on his own. But as time passes and his confidence grows, not to mention Halo reaching its warmest weather at Longheat, he finally sets off one morning towards the Sea of Glass, intent on seeing some of what his region has to offer. Crunching through freshly fallen snow and leaving neat prints - the only good thing about having to wear his snow boots - the Raeling finds himself in the curious position of needing both warm clothing and sunglasses to ward off the light bouncing against the Tundra.
It's no use him trying to judge how long it's taken to arrive at the enormous ice field - he's still getting the hang of navigation and the position of the sun - but its intimidating beauty is enough for him to fall to a halt, staring off into its twinkling midst. On his shoulders he's slung a pair of ice skates; he's never used them, but he's hoping if he might learn, he can surprise his mother when he gets back home.
