It takes a lot to shut up Jack Barclay, but Flora manages to do it every gods-damned time, and though a muscle feathers at his jaw, there's nothing he can say in response to her words that wouldn't be a lie. He isn't just anyone. The governor hadn't had all the things Flora could do and more, all the people she can rely on, all the favours she can cash in with little more than a flick of her hair.
