The immense and immediate stench would have him retching if his senses could even register anything else but pain. He had to focus on his breathing as he sputtered more blood from his mouth. He fumbled around for a pocket, eyes closed tightly.

Finally he pulled what he was fumbling for, and hoped each of them would see it. He was pulling his compass. There was no time for him to wait, and he couldn’t be moved to the ship.
