Sohalia
Koa, it seemed, was angry. Who or what he was angry at, exactly, Soh wasn't sure. Dahlia? Ever? Or was he angry at her, for being the reason that all of it had happened in the first place? Soh couldn't blame him if he was. Despite her friends' best efforts, and despite the slow healing of the festering wound of her guilt, she still felt like there must have been something she could have done. If she'd been stronger, less naive, something. Then maybe none of this would have happened.
But even if she still thought that things should have gone differently, Tal and Flora and Lena had all insisted that it wasn't her fault, that had she fought back, she might have died. And she knew, deep down, that if a demigod couldn't take on the Family and win, then she'd have had no chance at all. So instead of being cowed by Koa's bitterness, she simply remained silently, regarding him coolly, unsure what to say or how to help.
Then he turned his attention back to her, coming out of whatever dark place it seemed he'd gone. And that was almost worse, because in truth, she didn't have a plan. She'd just wanted to see home, just once, before she went off looking for lilies and taking time to herself to recover from her ordeal. And she'd just thought, if the Family had released her, then surely they wouldn't be looking to kidnap her again, that maybe a quick look would be worth the risk.
"Then I would have faced the consequences," she said honestly. Maybe it was stupid, but it was the only thing she could have done. "But they let me go. If they wanted to hurt me, they could have a hundred times over. I'm clearly not a threat to them." And this time, it was Soh's voice that was tinged with bitterness, because hadn't the same thing basically happened to her as happened to Koa?
