i could be the reason you can't sleep at night
Jack's words are like a balm against the ragged edges of her fear, his voice reaching her through the darkness of her thoughts and shining enough light to reveal the dream for the illusion that it was. "I know," she whispers, her voice barely audible, the words catching in her throat. She wants to believe him, wants to let herself sink into the safety he offers, but the dream still clings to her just as Jack's blood had.
Swallowing hard, her eyes close as she focuses on the steady rhythm of his breathing, the rise and fall of his chest beneath her cheek. "I just… I can’t lose you again," she admits, her voice breaking on the words, the vulnerability of the admission making her chest ache. "None of that...none of it felt how I thought it would." Knowing that she could bring them both back hadn't softened any of it the way she naively thought it would.
Falling quiet for a long moment, her fingers tracing absent patterns against Jack's skin, her mind still tangled in the fear and love that seem to consume her in equal measure, Flora takes another breath before lifting her head, her gaze searching Jack’s face. "Just… promise me, okay?" she whispers, her voice trembling, her aqua eyes softly shining with unshed tears as she looks at him. "Promise me you won’t leave." It was more than she'd ever asked of him, certainly more than just having him for just a short time, but gods she was more wrong about thinking that was all she wanted from the captain than she had been about the inescapable pull of death.
