[KQ] a moment of inattention

A brittle wind skims the desert, swirling dust devils that dance across the horizon. In one swirl, you glimpse a pale face or mask-like shape, but when the dust settles, there’s no sign of it. An odd hush hangs in the heat, as if the entire desert is silently scrutinizing your every move.
