Mort, when he arrived, was both nothing like she'd imagined and exactly like she'd imagined all at once.
His presence was gentle and comforting, and Alys looked up from where she knelt in front of the shrine to find dark curls not unlike her own and brown eyes filled with affection, as though they were old friends reuniting after a long time apart. She regarded the god in awe; she'd never expected a response, not from Mort, of all gods, and yet here he was. And he was not alone.
Sascha bounded from behind the god, and Alys gave a wordless cry. Had she not been on her knees already, she would have fallen to them anyway as she reached out for her beloved companion who had been taken from her far too soon - and entirely due to her own negligence. "Sascha!" she cried, tears streaming down her face as her heart swelled with joy. "I'm so sorry, Sascha. I never would have brought you if I'd known -" That you'd die.
As she cradled her companion lovingly, she looked up at Mort, eyes shining with appreciation. "Thank you," she said, her voice full of warmth and gratefulness and humility all at once. "I can't - I can never repay you for this alone," Alys continued. "But I would do anything to have her back. That is, if she wants to come back." After all, if Sascha was enjoying her time in Mort's halls, perhaps she wouldn't want to return to a world in which there was such uncertainty and danger. "I would never want to do something that she didn't want, too." Never again.
