The stars twinkle upon them overhead and he sits quietly to let her parse through her thoughts and feelings and give them a voice, though his brows to furrow towards a gentle frown as he realises what she's saying. "You're right, 'bout Remi and Sunjata," he says at last, glancing back at her. "I did work with 'em. But there's no working with the Family. I only got a peek into Dahlia's mind an' I know that much."
But it's more than that - it's personal, and Jack surprises nobody more than himself to feel prickly defiance rise in the back of his throat at the mere idea of surrender, no matter what fluff they wrap it in. "I don't throw out olive branches to hands that stick knives in me," he says, his voice a low rumble in the dark. He'd been killed by Pierce, slowly, toyed with until there was nothing left of him to bleed out onto the forest floor. And he'd killed Flora afterwards too, just for kicks.

He might love Flora, but he's not the region's king, or governor, or whatever other flash title they've made up since. He isn't even on the council. "But they're gonna have to grind me under their heel before I give up. Not until I let 'em have a taste of what they did to us."
