Sunk in his own thoughts, Tal had already started walking past the confectioner's stall without so much as a sideways glance at the weird food. His scowl was good at scaring away people who didn't know him well, but Maea had enough experience with the courier to understand that his face just did that. There was no denying that he was more subdued than usual, though, and when she drew his attention to the gelatinous purple dessert he shuddered, scowl deepening.
Not really," he admitted with a grimace, but then shook his head and made an attempt at being properly sociable. "But, uh... I'll see if I can help y'out with it, if y'want t'try it." The last thing he wanted to do was put anything that purple and wriggly-looking anywhere near his mouth. Even the thought of it made bile burn in the back of his throat. But it was the first time he'd seen Maea in seasons and he didn't want to ruin the reunion any more than he already had.
He tried to lighten his scowl and reached out to squeeze her shoulder in gratitude for her offer as she collected the confection and two spoons, and he went to secure them a little table nearby. "So, where've y'been?" he asked curiously, toying with his spoon and deliberately not looking at the too-real jellyfish floating serenely in its bowl of cream.
