Alys hurried back to the Peregrine, for once not fleeing Sascha’s ghost but carrying it with her like a precious gift. Her eyes were alight with excitement. After everything they’d been through, all that they’d lost, there finally seemed to be a light at the end of the tunnel, at least where Sascha’s loss was concerned. There was a long road ahead of her, it was true, but just the knowledge that it was possible had her almost giddy.
She climbed the rope ladder with the ease of long practice. Though she wasn’t quite as adept as Tal, she liked to think that she had gotten better over the years of travel together. As she climbed, she worked to temper her joy. Things had been difficult for Tal during and after the events of LongNight, and she didn’t want to forget his trauma. He deserved every bit of patience and grace she could give him, after he’d been so wonderful with her. Maybe, she hoped, this news would cheer him up a bit, even if it couldn’t erase what had happened to him.
”Tal, love?” she called as she boarded the Peregrine. ”Are you here?” Because for all she knew, he might be out on a delivery right now, leaving her to wait impatiently for his return.
