Everyone wants to see heaven
But no one wants to say goodbye
But no one wants to say goodbye
Koa’s indignation took Soh by surprise. It flashed in her eyes before fading to something like understanding. How could he think anything else, when he’d been hurt beyond imagining time and again? But at the same time… how could he think that the gods didn’t care? They’d sent warning after warning. Safrin, if Soh recalled correctly, had gone to try and stop this from happening. That she had failed… well, Soh didn’t want to think about that.
But she let him rant and rage, her heart hurting when the fight went out of him and he met her gaze with dulled copper eyes. The worst part was that she knew he was right. Even the demigods, immortal as they were, feared the Family, were seemingly powerless against them. It didn’t exactly make her confident in their chances. But if they stopped fighting, if they just gave up… what did that make them?
”Okay,” she said. ”Okay.” None of it was okay - not that Noe was infected, not that there was no cure, not that the gods weren’t listening, and not the anguish on Koa’s face. But his defeat was coming from a place of love - of not wanting to see the people he cared about suffer. And if his words were to be believed, maybe she was still one of those people.
Soh reached out again, but this time she placed a comforting hand on Koa’s shoulder. ”Noe might be infected, but the Family don’t seem to be hurting people who are infected, so I think she’s relatively safe for now. Stormbreak may be under Family control, but from all I’ve heard, they haven’t actually done anything to it, right? It sucks, but maybe we don’t need to have an answer today,” she reasoned.
