Smart? A silent snort was all she offered at that. If she'd been any kind of smart Maea wouldn't be in this situation to begin with. If she'd been smart enough to keep her mouth closed and her head down, there would have been no reason to move at all because she would never have confirmed truths she'd rather not know of, or offended anyone, or almost gotten a lot of people killed. Maybe she could claim some level of bookish intelligence, but when it came to actions and their consequences, she may as well be blind and deaf and definitely dumb.
Relieved to leave that conversation behind, Maea let out a huff of breath and rose in Remi's wake. The non-offer of a hand to hold was met with a light shrug, because she'd be more than willing to hold his hand if it was offered - grief and worry was nothing new to her - but given they were trying so hard not to get in each other's way, she wouldn't insist.
Hooking arms with him instead, she picked up the bundle and let Remi lead the way towards the house. "This is beyond generous," she murmured, swallowing against the flutter of anticipation. "You keep doing such nice things for me, Remi, and I have no way of properly thanking you."
