The dream had been crystal clear, real in a way that normal dreams never were. While Alys often knew when she was dreaming, this one was different. She couldn’t control the dream. She couldn’t wake up. All she could do was watch, and hear, and feel.
She saw Starfall, as though from far away: a violet-hued island rising from the sea, surrounded by violent storms that churned the surrounding waters. Lightning flickered and flashed through the clouds as waves roiled angrily against its shores. Even in her dream, Alys shuddered, unwilling to stay a moment longer than necessary and yet unable to look away.
Suddenly, as though from far away, she felt something. It was as if the very earth itself trembled, quaking beneath the stirrings of something far larger and more oppressive than Alys had ever imagined. She felt the tremors, as though something deep within the island rolled over in its sleep, and she was terrified.
Then, she woke up.
