It was the low growl of the dragon that alerted Maea to other travelers in the vicinity. Able to make out only fragmented shapes through the greening foliage at first, she realized who it was only as the path turned and Zavien stood from the rock to begin gathering up his things. Maea's guts plummeted, descending so fast she felt dizzy - a joyless roller-coaster of relived anger, desperation, shame - and for a panicked instant she froze, voice stuck like a lump in the throat.
But she couldn't just let him leave. Not after what she'd done. Not without saying something to explain, to apologize -
"W-wait!" she blurted, stopping dead in her tracks with pale hands upraised - showing him the lack of flames, the gesture of surrender. "Please? I'm - I'm sorry. For the other day. For what I said. I... it's not an excuse, but - can I explain? Apologize, somehow?" Probably not. Like Danta had said, she kept apologizing and never seemed to change. She wouldn't blame him if Zavien chose to walk away.
But she hoped he wouldn't. Hoped he would forgive the way her gaze lingered on the horrible scar on his chest and side before she caught herself and lowered it to the ground. Gazing at the irate little dragon seemed entirely appropriate; at least there was someone who wouldn't hesitate to retaliate and settle the score. That made it two people she should be apologizing too.
