It was nice, this ability to joke, to lay a hair’s breadth apart without it being awkward, to spend time together and enjoy themselves. If this was what Soh got from bottling up her increasingly insistent feelings for Koa, then so be it.

She’d been weak, useless, failed them when they’d needed her most. What kind of ruler did that? ”I just meant that… well, one region is enough to keep safe, you know?
