Just a slow exhale through his nose and a faint raise of his brow like, really? before the warmth of the spring finally coaxes a looseness back into his spine.
"Suppose you’re not wrong," he murmurs, voice low as the city hum fades behind them. The water glimmers, steam curling soft around the edges like someone tried to paint calm into the air. He crouches at the edge for a moment, fingers trailing through the surface. "Place is nicer than I expected." But then her thoughts brush his mind—not directly, not fully formed—but enough to prickle. The weight of them hangs in the air between their sentences. Caution. Confusion. Blood.
"That what you wanted to talk about?" he asks finally, still not looking at her, eyes fixed on the patterns his fingers are making in the rippling gold. "Zen?" His voice isn’t cold, but there’s something wary curled under the syllables, like he’s already bracing for whatever she might say next.
