Like stepping out atop the peak of a mountain and seeing the sheer scale of the world spread out beneath your feet, and realising just how small you were. Not insignificant, because if her therapist was right then everyone had their own value, but more like a luxury problem afforded one with too much time on her hands. "Can I do anything?" she wondered, thinking about roses, about the awful wait in the days to come, what other burdens he must be bearing in the meantime – things she might be able to do that had nothing to do with the island itself or the horrors that dwelled there, but might help him all the same. Extending her hand towards him, palm open if he wanted something real to hold on to, it was to the man beside her that she turned this time, reflections forgotten when the real person was suffering.
