Vesper tips his head back until it rests against the sun-warmed stone, shadows stretching languid as a sigh across the surface of the spring. The stars across his skin shimmer faintly in the ripples Caly makes as she floats nearby, her thoughts loosening, warm as summer wind through tall grass. He doesn’t reach for them—doesn’t have to. Her contentment radiates out in soft waves, and it settles something quiet in his chest.
"Mm. Ships, waves, the occasional sea monster." His grin curves lazy and toothily.
But then she says dad, and the grin fades—not into something dark, but something drier, like salt left behind after the tide. His eyes stay fixed on the ceiling of sky overhead, half-lidded. "Ran into him in the Fingers." His fingers trail along the surface of the water, swirling a small current. "He said he was collectin’ on a debt. Didn’t say what. Offered to let me follow him to finish this quest Safrin gave me, so I did." Vesper shrugs. "Honestly, he seems a lot more...the way I expected him to be now that he and Flora broke up." Which was to say decidedly more dangerous.
