The tunnel constricted almost immediately.
Gone were the carved stone walls of the upper descent—here, everything pressed inward. The ceiling sagged low, forcing the taller among them—Sah, and Hadama —(#shortking Jack is fine) to stoop with bent backs and tensed shoulders. Stone scraped across armour and clothing alike, damp and uneven, slick with condensation or something less natural. Only two could walk abreast at a time, and even that felt like too much. Shoulders brushed the crumbling walls. Boots threatened to clip each other’s heels with every careful step.
The light fromHadama ’s trident flickered over stone that no longer seemed entirely stone. Veins of violet crystal pulsed dully, barely brighter than the fungi clinging to the ceiling like rot. And the floor beneath their feet had…changed. At first, it seemed like ordinary dampness. A softer give, a subtle shift in traction. But the further they walked, the more it became noticeable—a tackiness to each step. Not quite mud. Not quite water. Something else. The ground clung just slightly to soles and heels, a barely-there resistance, like the trail was watching them walk it.
The air, too, had taken on a peculiar weight—no gas, no smell, not yet—but a tension. Like a breath held just behind the next bend. The kind of silence that warned of something not asleep, but waiting.
