The screaming below was something amusing. Not so much suffering, but the calamity, the bedlam, the mayhem in the rush of those they’d consider enemies. Perhaps they shouldn’t have been pillaging and pirating. Perhaps they should’ve known their territory. Regardless, maybe there was a lesson to be found in all this.
The crack of wood and the smell of smoke was another reign of an arsonist’s dream. The Firecracker moved with the pulse of the flames raging below, but Melita remained unbothered. If anything, she was deeply entertained, her mind a fractious and unrelenting pace of all those ardent, avaricious, vicious little dreams come to life. A worthwhile proof of all the dangers and treacheries lurking in her midst, if people kept daring to scratch and reel at the surface.
“All right, I’ve got four left,” and she handed over two to split the deal, as if to emphasize on making it count. Some of the swimmers seemed to be making it to shore, screaming at one another, and others continued to flail around in panic and upheaval. “Wouldn’t it be awful if there were ghost whales or sharks nearby,” she hummed, clearly unbothered by the whole thing. She didn’t think any of them would truly be maimed. Just their shitty ship.
To which she pulled the pin and dropped another, intending to mark the vessel as no longer sea worthy.
