The memory of her recent party flickers in vivid, chaotic flashes—one of Jack’s kids pulling Mateo toward a convenient closet, another being thoroughly tasted by Kaisel up against the bar. Weird didn’t begin to cover hearing Jack reference them as his children; the juxtaposition was dizzying. She keeps those particular thoughts carefully submerged beneath the surface, wary of disrupting the fragile peace they’ve managed to cobble together out of popsicles and sunshine.
Instead, she focuses on Bassian, because it’s infinitely safer—and far easier—to laugh warmly at the familiar sailor’s expense.
