Lena was familiar with New Haven, as she’d assisted in building it. Little had she known that one day she’d be venturing into the homestead with hopes of staying within for a little while – nor how much her heart would wrench at the notions.
Walking in gave her pause – so used to the comforts of the home she’d chosen – eyes widening before closing and opening them again to find everything the same. And it wasn’t that she lacked any gratitude; it was the pang of homesickness filling into her ribcage and poignantly twisting the knife. Mittens growled behind her, wrinkling its face, and all she could do was take a deep breath and nod.
“We can make it work,” she said something like a promise, maybe a conviction for both of them. She eyed the fireplace, pondering over starting it now to ward off the chill, but perhaps yes, they should’ve been inspecting it first. “And I can go shopping for some more clothes and things after-,” though she didn’t have a ton of money, it’d been purposefully snagged so it was enough for a day trip and then right back. Maybe she could work some of it off, or haggle a bit.
Placing her hand in his, she strolled towards the kitchen – noting the bare countertop, the several workings of ovens and kettles, the chairs shoved inward around a plain table.
