Sohalia nodded as Theea explained, understanding evident on her face. "The family that we choose is just as important as the family we're born into," she said. "Sometimes more so, at least in my experience." After all, she'd known very little of her blood family. All she had to go on was what she had chosen, who she had surrounded herself with. And she rather thought she'd done a pretty good job.
As for her past, Soh softened, reaching out to touch Theea's arm, gentle and understanding. "We all do the best we can," she agreed. "Auden might not have been a perfect guardian, but they did what they thought was right. What they thought would protect me." It hadn't worked, in the end, and it had left Soh woefully unprepared for the world, but she could appreciate that Auden had tried.
Shaking off the past, Soh realized that the rag in her hand had warmed. She removed it from her eye, which was indeed beginning to swell, and dunked it in the water once more. She grinned at Theea's lightheartedness, grateful for the chance to put all this behind them. "You're too sweet," she said, touched in spite of the playful nature of Theea's words. Then she grinned. "D'you think anyone will notice if I just walk around sideways to hide the bad eye?"
