He turned to find that Maea had gone to stoke the fire. ”Hmm?” he asked, tilting his head as he watched her prepare a piece of wood for the hearth. Then, understanding, he considered her question.
His relationship with his late wife had been, easy in some ways, but he’d been plagued by his own inexperience at the time, constantly worrying about doing the wrong thing. It had taken time for them to grow together, until one day, his concern had seemed silly in retrospect.
Things with Maea were different. It wasn’t that he didn’t have some of the same worries, but he’d spent enough time with Maea to believe that they could talk through anything that came up. It was the difference between being friends first - there was a layer of camaraderie that he’d never experienced on the front end of a relationship before.
”I couldn’t tell you,” he said finally. ”I’ve had one serious relationship, and it wasn’t like this. Is easy… bad?”
