The waves come in soft, barely enough to stir the edge of the sand where Remi's heels rest. His legs are stretched out toward the surf, his palms pressed to the ground behind him, fingers half-buried in damp grit. The breeze has cooled with the hour, lifting the ends of his curls and bringing with it the scent of salt and something faintly sweet from the jungle beyond.

He sits where the tide can find him if it wants to, the bottle of wine beside him opened but untouched. The cork is somewhere behind him, forgotten.

His eyes are closed. There’s no sound but the sea. No words, no spell, no grand gesture. Just a quiet space, held open in case Mort is listening, which, Remi well knows, he is.
