maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live
I can’t help the small smile that tugs at my lips when he rattles off exactly the sort of people I’d been talking about. “Then your fashion sense is very Torchline,” I say, tipping my head toward him. “You and your sister practically are the islands. The clothes, the confidence, the whole thing.”
On just how many people he finds interesting, a wry grin works its way onto my face. “That doesn’t even sound like a difficult time. Sounds like you had a great time,” I tease, adding quickly, “Not that I’d know anything about your experience, of course.” Still, I can’t help wondering if it’s supposed to feel like that. Maybe it’s different for me. Maybe it helped that I was at least a teenager before I aged.
When he brings up Melita, my laugh comes out quick and bright. “She told me about that! I didn’t know you were part of it. And she definitely didn’t say you were throwing them at random citizens.” The sudden understanding clicks, and I grin wider. “I get why the Dragoons almost got involved. That’s so much better.”
I glance down at the ribbons in my lap, idly straightening one before I begin snipping through the next, making this one shorter than the last. “I’ve thought about asking Ludo to ferry a message for me before,” I admit. “But… the person I’d want to reach might not appreciate me trying to make deals with mischievous heralds just to say hello.” I shrug lightly, letting it pass with a quick smile. “Probably safer to just stick to water balloons and costumes.”
