Vesper lets her lead, the faint tug of her hand more ceremony than necessity; his stride lengthens easily to match her bounce, boots whispering over the maze’s shifting paths. Warmth lingers in the clasp of her fingers, and he doesn’t bother pretending he isn’t following, not when Nova’s gravity has always been its own force.
At the first declaration, his brows climb, the dry lift of them almost hidden behind the sweep of pale hair. "Your what now," he murmurs, voice catching somewhere between amusement and disbelief, though the corner of his mouth tilts in her direction. The flames ahead throw a soft, flickering glow against the roses, hinting at the obsidian heart waiting in the clearing, and at the power curled there like something half-awake.
Her question earns only a slow shrug, as if the thing she’s fishing for is hardly worth fussing over. "Celestial shield," he says, the words smooth, almost lazy, though the truth of it sits heavier in his chest. As a demigod, he's meant to be stronger than she is, but gods if the idea of her wielding a bunch of fire born out of this place doesn't have him reconsidering this outing. He sips in a breath, tasting the air, heat and rose-sweet mingled, and decides fuck it.
A crooked grin surfaces, subtle but sharp enough to catch the light. "When you say show me your fire magic," he drawls, eyes sliding to hers, "you actually mean shoot it at me, don’t you?"
