He happily accepts her amendment, nodding along with it like it's only proper and deserved. It all rather pales in comparison to everyone I've ever loved is gone now though, his horror made all too real. He cannot imagine that feeling, doesn't particularly want to. "I'm sorry, that's—" he starts to say something pitying and sad, like he could carry the weight of the pain he knows is there if she can't. He stops though, maybe catching the way it sounds, or for once recognizing how she prefers to keep it. What could he really do for her anyway? What could anyone, in a position like that? Better to let her keep her smile, however much he doesn't really believe it. The whole point of pretend is that it's not real.
So he softens instead, "I'm glad you made it through," and puts the pen back to work.
As the heaviness gives way to her extremely surprising talents, he's no less startled when it happens again. Despite expecting something, the sudden emergence of her tits near his face and the weight of her heat in his lap is enough to start early onset rigor mortis for his entire body. "Shit—" he pales, every hair standing on end. The tension melts into a laugh though, delighted by her more than anything, his head tilting back against the wall with all the winded relief of someone who just escaped a near death experience. At least, that's what he's telling himself, because otherwise he can think of no other reason not to agree to climbing onto the back of a relative stranger, who's sanity may or may not be questionable, to hurtle around the area as a dragon rider. "Um, that sounds fucking amazing!"
