Vesper slips from place to place, a flicker of shadow and starlight keeping him always one step ahead, but it isn’t long before Nova's mood shifts from playful to sharp, frustration burning hot enough in her thoughts that it prickles along his skin before her fire ever does. He feels it closing the distance, no longer wild shots loosed in her excitement but something that bends and follows, answering the pulse of her instincts. Heat claws at the back of his coat in a way that makes the hair at his nape rise, and for the first time he has to throw his hand out and call starlight to him in earnest.
The shield flares up quick, a bright crescent cutting the air as her flames break against it, scattering sparks like constellations torn apart. He braces, boots digging into the earth this time instead of slipping away, and though the magic holds, it’s with far less casual grace than before. Her laughter thrums in his head, raw and triumphant, and he can’t help the snort that escapes him even as the heat beads sweat along his brow.
Finally, with a rough exhale that twists into a laugh, he lets the shield dissolve and lifts his hands in open surrender, grin sharp and unrepentant despite the scorch still lingering in the air. "Alright," he calls over the roar of the eternal flame, his voice pitched to carry, "alright—you win." And though it costs him nothing to yield, the admission comes with a glint in his eyes that says he means it, pride folded beneath the dry amusement.
