He lifts his brows, giving her the slow nod of a man with no intention of stepping into another blast of fire if he can help it. "Yeah," he drawls, tone emphatic as if agreeing with the gods themselves, "yours is much better than mine." The lie slides easy off his tongue, because the glitter-bright pulse of her thoughts makes it worth every word; her delight sparks through the clearing brighter than any flame she’s thrown.
He sighs then, the sound drawn out, and tips his chin toward the living hedges that still sway faintly around them. "C’mon. Time we get back before this place decides to swallow us whole." Whether she chooses to dart ahead in a shift or skip along beside him, he falls into step—or slips through shadows when it suits—content to let the maze rearrange itself in their wake until the hedgerows finally part to spill them back into the wider world.
