"Don’t take bein’ one of her kids to know how she feels about Sunjata, though," he says dryly, voice low but steady. "Maybe them islands only open up for folk who already know the way. He tips the bottle again with a nod of thanks, the rum burning smooth down his throat. Pulling free of his heavy sweater, the white shirt beneath is charred and clinging, skin beneath more burned than bleeding, marked with the raw lash of Jack’s lightning. With a sigh, he glances sidelong at the captain, blue eyes sharp with wry humour. "Got any ice?"
As for King’s End, he only nods, reading enough in the words Jack hasn’t said so he doesn't bother to ask if the captain has it in him to start over. Immortality stretches ahead like an empty horizon, and if thirty-seven already feels tired, it’s gonna be a long fuckin’ voyage. His grin edges wolfish as he lifts the bottle again. "Still—House of Midnight’s a step up from Torchline’s brothels, if nothin’ else."
