Damien caught the way Ronin’s shoulders shifted, the quick readjustment from guarded to something easier, looser. It made him tilt his head just a fraction, like he was testing the air. So the man remembered him too. That counted for something.
He nodded. “Damien Ulfsen,” he confirmed, his voice still rough, but quieter now, almost conversational.
At Ronin’s glance toward Aria, Damien shifted the package of beans under his arm and lifted his free hand, palm angled low. “This is Aria. Go ahead—say hello.” The cub’s ears twitched at the signal, and she chirped, tail flicking high as she padded up to Ronin’s boots, all bright-eyed eagerness.
It was then that Damien noticed the small shadow overhead, a ribbon-tailed shape circling down. His expression softened, the lines of his face easing in recognition. “And that must be… Sugar?” He looked back to Ronin, as though to confirm what he already knew. “Flora told me about how you saved Spice.” He said it like that was explanation enough.
His gaze dropped back to the cart then, to the deconstructed scarecrow slumped among the hay and wood. “So what's the deal with this guy? You gonna make yourself an army?” His tone was dry, curious rather than mocking, though the flicker of a smile touched his mouth. "Or just keeping busy?"
