Maybe the darkness has muffled more than just her sight, because she's fairly certain she's never heard those words come out of his mouth so easily. Nothing about his muted enthusiasm, pocketed hands, or willingness to keep Crisweeper around prepared her for it, making the moment all the sweeter.
