The sound of Frey’s clap seemed to ripple through the air, muffled by snow and still somehow endless. For an instant, the world went weightless.
It wasn’t sight or sound that Damien felt first, but presence. A second heartbeat where his should be. A warmth threading through the cold. Aria’s pulse flickered against his senses — startled, bright — and his own breath caught in answer.
The cub let out a small, startled huff, pawing at the snow in confusion. Then she turned and bounded toward him, leaping against his chest with enough force to rock him back a step.
He caught her, laughing under his breath. But beneath the sound was something deeper: understanding. He didn’t hear her voice, not really, but he saw what she meant — a brief, vivid flash of their hearth the night before, of shared warmth, of fish-scent and safety.
His throat went tight. He brushed his fingers through her fur and met Frey’s gaze.
“Guess that makes it official,” he said, low and steady. “Not that she ever gave me much choice.”
Aria chuffed again, tail flicking in smug agreement. The bond hummed between them — faint, but unmistakable. He could sense the shape of her contentment as clearly as the cold against his skin, and the edges of his own calm bled back toward her like shared breath.
“Thank you,” he said finally, lifting his eyes to Frey. “For trusting me with her. For letting me earn this.”
He hesitated, then added softly, “I’ll keep her safe.”
Snow drifted down between them, catching in Aria’s fur and Frey’s light. The shrine felt less like a boundary now, and more like a doorway.
