Remi staggers as Kaisel’s foot finds his heel, momentum pitching him forward; coordination never was his strong suit, not even when falling down stairs was Ronin’s specialty. Where Remi stood is a shape wrapped in darkness and salt: a wraith that hovers a hand’s breadth off the wet stone. Ragged shrouds of shadow peel and billow around limbs that have stretched too long to be comfortable, and the light in the cavern seems to bend around the shape instead of through it.
When he turns toward Kaisel, there’s no travelling tongue in the voice that comes, only a gravelled, low sound that seems to crawl out of the walls themselves. "I said you would never take me alive."
