VESPER
Vesper’s first instinct is denial—slam the doors shut, pull every shutter tight, pretend there’s nothing to leak in the first place—but Jack’s already standing in the spill of heat beside him, hands in his pockets like he wandered over by accident. The subtlety is familiar and weirdly grounding. Vesper exhales once, low and controlled, before straightening and smoothing his expression into something more neutral.
"I'm not stayin'" he mutters, voice pitched quiet enough not to drift past them. "Just here to talk to Nova." A flick of his eyes confirms she’s still terrorizing the poor egg vendor with enthusiasm that could power an entire city. Good. Let her glow. Let her distract anyone who might be watching him.
His gaze follows Jack’s gesture upward. Balloons drift lazily across the sky, bright patches of colour tugging at the heat. Vesper’s mouth curls, more smirk than smile, dry and edged with something that softens almost imperceptibly when aimed at his father. "You mean in my year an’ a half of bein’ alive?" he says, quiet but unmistakably sarcastic. He huffs under his breath, shaking his head as another balloon lifts off with a cluster of shrieking passengers dangling under it. The sound carries all the way down to the sand. "Nope."
Another balloon dips lower, close enough that the wicker basket creaks. Vesper eyes it with clear distrust. The fabric shivers in the thermal updraft. Someone waves cheerfully. He does not wave back. "You’d never catch me up in one either," he adds, the words slipping smoother and wryer than the knot sitting under his ribs.
Vesper is standing psuedo invisibly with Jack.
