Suddenly there were people lining the approaching herd, bundled in furs, voices hushed as the luxere were brought forward. The animals sensed it too. Their steps faltered, antlers brightening as nerves rippled through the herd. Marcus swallowed and urged his gelding closer, positioning himself along the flank where the glow threatened to fracture into panic.
Then Amhran began to sing. Marcus didn’t hesitate. He joined in, matching the melody a best he could. Marcus kept singing as they passed between the watching crowd, gaze fixed on the glowing racks ahead rather than the people pressing close on either side. He could feel the weight of the moment, but the song carried him through it.
