Noah lingered at the edge of the game stalls while Deimos and Erebos were promptly swept up by the chaos of it all. Noah watched them with a faint curve to his mouth, arms folded loosely as the sentient blanket made a half-hearted attempt to scoot toward a sunnier patch of sand.
His gaze drifted outward, habit more than intention. He scanned the crowd the way he always did. Couples leaned into one another on picnic blankets. Parents lifted children onto shoulders. Someone laughed and reached for a familiar hand.
And then it hit him—sharp and sudden, like cold water in his lungs.

The thought settled heavy in his chest, grief blooming in the quiet spaces the festival noise couldn’t reach. He could almost see her, sunlight caught in her hair, the way she would have teased him into trying a game he’d pretend not to care about. The absence of her pressed in from every direction, a hollow too wide to ignore.

He didn’t announce his decision. He simply stepped back, letting the crowd swallow the sound of his departure, wings unfolding only once he was clear to carry him home, where the quiet would hurt less than this.
